Nigeria Beat Kenya To Qualify For World Cup!

Could the real Nigerians stand up? That was the questions thousands of Kenyan soccer supporters were asking and when Obafemi Martins emerged from the bench, he proved the king pin to secure Nigeria a 3-2 win at Kasarani.

The loss was Kenya's tenth against Nigeria in their 12 encounters having drawn twice. It eventually buried Kenya's hopes of making a return to the Africa Nations Cup in Angola in January. Kenya last featured in this tournament six years ago in Tunisia.

Nigeria emerged the top team in Group 2 with 12 points and qualified for the world's top soccer event after Mozambique beat Tunisia 1-0 in the other Group 2 qualifier tie in Maputo on Saturday.

Tunisia took the second spot in the group standings with 11 points, while Mozambique finished third with seven. Kenya remains at the bottom with three points.

Only the winners of the group sail through to the World Cup finals in South Africa while the top three, Tunisia, Nigeria and Mozambique will be heading to Angola for the continental championships.

It was the visitors who found their rhythm first as they surged forward to seek an early opener. They won a free kick from the edge of the 18-yard box.

In the 12th minute, Odemwinge dribbled through the Kenya defence to set up Yakubu Ayiegbeni whose effort went wide with only Willice Ochieng to beat in goal.

Denmark based Emmanuel Ake received a pass from Oliech from center field throw, dribbled past one Nigerian defender and returned it to Oliech who beat Vincent Enyeama in goal in the 15thminute.

Nigeria responded and put Kenya to pressure to see the Super Eagles gain three corners. Poor defence from the set piece saw Kenya right back Julius Owino and Ochieng clearing from the goal line.

Yusuf Alitanda came in for Olofinjana who had been injured in the 30th minute. But with the battle set in the midfield both team found it hard to angle their strikes on the two goals.

Only Odemwinge weak effort from the 20 yard area tested Ochiengin goal while Harambee Stars would have gone two up had Oliech's cross found its target as it cut through the Nigerian defence in a counter attack.

Deep into injury time, Oliech cut through the Nigerian defence but could not squeeze a shot in the narrowed corner near the post with Enyeama body blocking the shot.

Nigeria defence led by captain Joseph Yobo and Victor Obinna were not the best pairing and in more than one occasion exchanged words as their leaky defence exposed them.

Mike Enyeama opened up Kenya defence in the 58th minute but his effort was weak. Next it was Yobo whose long-range free kick rebound off the cross bar. But in the 62nd minute, substitute Obafemi Martins scored when Odemwinge put him through.

Three minutes later it was Yakubu Ayiegibeni who scored from another defence error from Kenya.

The tide went in favour of Kenya as they settled their nerves but, it proved as a hard nut to crack the Nigerian defence. But when all looked lost, Allan Wanga emerged from the substitution bench to head Harambee Stars level in the 79th minute.

But Kenya defence was exposed five minutes later as Nigeria utilized their set piece from a short corner to provide Martins with a chance to score from close range to lead 3-2 in the 84th minute.

That marked the end of the battle as Nigeria opted to waste time and succeeded to hold the scores at 3-2 in their favor.

New Zealand joined other countries in the trip to South Africa after they beat Bahrain in the playoff in Asia.

Nigeria will join Cameroon, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, who sealed their tickets with a match to play, in the World Cup, which will be played in South Africa from June 11 to July 11.

ASUU strike called off..For Just 2 Weeks

The Academic Staff Union of Universities yesterday suspended the strike action it embarked upon since June 22, for two weeks, “to enable a cordial atmosphere for the peaceful conclusion of negotiations” between it and the federal government.
In a swift reaction, the Minister of Education, Sam Egwu expressed optimism that the decision would eventually pave the way for lasting peace in the sector.
Announcing the suspension at the Imo State University, Owerri, ASUU president, Professor Ukach-ukwu Awuzie on behalf of its National Executive Council said the strike action would not have taken place if the federal government had done what was expected of it initially.
He recalled that the strike was inevitable following the refusal by the government to sign the agreement it “willingly, through the process of collective bargaining, entered into with the union after two and half years of negotiations.”
The ASUU president said: “If there was mutual confidence and understanding between ASUU and government, there would have been no strike.
“ASUU realizes the impact of the strike on students, and is yielding to the clarion calls by concerned Nigerians, while being optimistic that the federal government would not relent in her agreement with ASUU.”
The ASUU president stressed the need for the state governors to be involved in what goes on within the systems as they were misinformed on the whole situation, “hence they misunderstood the terms of the agreement reached.”
He added that state universities must attain minimum standards of whatever the federal government agrees with ASUU.
On the issue of public umbrage towards the ASUU action, Awuzie observed that such would not have been the case since the union did not act alone and “both parties were involved in the action, even though ASUU was on the right track.”
Awuzie called on the federal government to as a matter of urgency to conclude agreements with other unions in the university system so that the universities can return to proper operations “and to avoid any actions that are capable of destroying the existing harmony among the unions on the campuses.”
He commended the intervention of President Umaru Yar’Adua through the Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
The union also acknowledged the efforts of the president, Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar; the Speaker, House of Represe-ntatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole; Nigerian students “and other labour movements, including the Trade Union Congress, civil society organisations, the Education Rights Campaign and various students’ organisations.”
“We also thank the legislature, media organisations and Nigerians generally for their solidarity and support,” Awuzie said.
Egwu in his reaction stated: “I am delighted and hopeful that we have, alongside Oshiomhole achieved what we have now, which is the agreement with ASUU to call off the strike for two-weeks and for renegotiations to begin.”
Egwu noted that the prolonged strike and its attendant consequence of keeping university students at home and the long term effect on the university system, compelled the two sides to re-appraise their positions.
The minister explained that “while the federal government retains the university autonomy granted recently, the grey issue of salary increase remains at 40 per cent pending renegotiations through collective bargaining with the union.”
On the insistence by ASUU that the federal government signed an agreement with it, Egwu said: “if that is the case, such an agreement would imperil the state universities.
“What we have agreed to do is for the Pro-chancellors rather than university councils of all federal universities should sign the agreements on behalf of government.”
While regretting what he described as the avoidably prolonged strike action, Egwu promised: “We are putting this behind us and ensuring that this doesn’t happen again because of the destructive effects of these recurring prolonged strike actions.
“We are hopeful that this latest respite would eventually lead to a final resolution as we are determined to evolve long term solutions that would return our higher institutions to global standards.”
ASUU last June embarked on an indefinite strike to protest the failure by the federal government to sign the report of the Gamaliel Onosode-led committee set up in 2006 to re-negotiate the 2001 agreement between the union and government.
The strike continued as negotiation between the government and ASUU broke down following the government's insistence that it could not sign any agreement that would be binding on state governors.
As a result, negotiations were discontinued until recently when President Yar'Adua invited Oshiomhole to intervene, with a view to resolving the dispute amicably.
Oshiomhole, thereafter met with the representatives of the union and government on October 3 at National Unive-rsities Commission (NUC) secretariat in Abuja.
Meanwhile, a Vice Chance-llor of one the federal universities, who spoke on condition of anonymity said the two-week suspension was too short to invite the students back to school.
“We are hopeful that the matter will be resolved quickly, but this is uncertain. The time is too short for us to invite the students back to school,” he said.
Meanwhile, the federal Government has reached a working understanding with the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), which were also on strike.
Minister of Education, Dr. Sam Egwu, who addressed newsmen at the end of a meeting between the unions and government officials, said government had no intention of treating the issues concerning university unions separately, adding that he received the permission of the president to discuss with all the unions – ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT.

Obama Nobel Peace Prize Winner

It was a surprising announcement today from Oslo, Norway that even made the room full of reporters gasp: US President Barack Obama has been rewarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for what the Norweigan Nobel Committee said is “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

The exciting news is sure to create a buzz in Washington, especially since no one predicted him to be a front-runner in the race. However, this isn’t the first time a sitting president has won the award. Both Roosevelt and Wilson won the honor in the early 20th century.

The reward includes a $1.4 million prize, but a more important benefit is the positive impact this could potentially make for American and global politics. I’m certain this will be a weekend of wonderful celebration in the White House!
“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.” (cnn)

How Chelsea Won Liverpool: Anelka and Maloud downed Benitez's men... Chelsea 2- 0 Liverpool )

Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda scored as Chelsea defeated Liverpool this afternoon at Stamford Bridge.

The first half saw both sides begin cautiously with limited chances at both ends. As the half progressed both Nicolas Anelka and Fernando Torres had headed attempts on goal that were saved comfortably. Albert Riera almost scored with a long-range effort towards the end of the first half.

Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 59th minute through an Anelka strike from close range. Liverpool struggled to break down the home side's defence until Yossi Benayoun was introduced midway through the second half. The Israeli wasted a great chance to score late on, but not before Malouda had extended Chelsea's lead after powerful work by Didier Drogba.

Liverpool were on top in the early stages with Steven Gerrard floating out to the left flank and sending a number of crosses into the box. Chelsea were able to cope with these comfortably as Ricardo Carvalho marshalled the penalty area.

Chelsea tried to venture forward in the 10th minute, connecting a few passes together in midfield, but whenever they got together any momentum Javier Mascherano was there to break up the play and win the ball back for Liverpool.

Chelsea created the first real chance of the game in the 28th minute, Michael Essien found himself up field on the left and pulled the ball back onto his right foot, turning Glen Johnson. The Ghanian crossed the ball towards the back post as Nicolas Anelka stole a yard on Emiliano Insua. The Frenchman connected with a glancing header that was saved by Pepe Reina low to his left.

Gerrard had an opportunity to open the scoring with a free-kick slightly to the left of centre. The English international couldn't control his strike as his attempt went over the cross-bar. It was too central to have troubled Henrique Hilario in the Chelsea goal.

Essien had a decent chance towards the end of the first half, Frank Lampard won a corner for his side as his shot deflected off Martin Skertel. Essien was lurking at the edge of the penalty area and as the ball was cleared it fell to the Ghanian who struck the ball with his right foot.

His first attempt was blocked but the rebound broke for Essien who took the ball into the penalty area and hit a low shot towards the near post. Reina was equal to it and saved without a problem.

Torres had a good opportunity too, as Dirk Kuyt crossed from the right the Spaniard got the run on Carvalho to meet the ball at the near post. El Nino didn't make strong contact and the ball went straight to Hilario.

Albert Riera almost caught out Hilario with a speculative effort from a long-range free-kick just before half-time. The Spaniard smashed the ball towards the bottom right-hand corner and the Portuguese reacted very late to make a finger-tip save to his right.

The corner was sent towards Skrtel at the front post, the Slovakian looked to be held down by Drogba as he went to head the ball but the referee was uninterested and waved away Liverpool's claims.

The second half began with Liverpool on the attack, with Gerrard unleashing a shot on goal from the right It was well struck but was off target.

Branislav Ivanovic tested Reina with a long range effort moments later, on a rare forage forward the Serbian defender struck the ball with venom. The ball swirled in the air but Reina kept his eye on the ball and got his body behind the ball as he saved low to his left.

Chelsea took the lead in the 59th minute, Mascherano was caught in possession and the Blues broke on Liverpool with Ballack feeding the ball to Drogba on the left. The Ivorian sent the ball across the face of the goal and Anelka pounced at the back post, slotting the ball into the gaping net and beyond Reina. The ball was at a difficult height and it was a deft finish by the Frenchman.

Rafael Benitez responded by replacing Riera with Yossi Benayoun as Liverpool were finding it difficult to create going forward. The Israeli international had an impact in the 73rd minute, showing good footwork to beat his marker and slide the ball to Johnson in the middle. The ex-Blue tried his luck from 20 yards but his shot went over the cross-bar.

Lampard won a free-kick for Chelsea after a foul by Gerrard on the left. Drogba stepped up and rifled a powerful strike goal wards, Reina dived to his right but the Ivorian's shot flew inches wide of the post.

Liverpool were coming closer to equalising, a cross to the back post from Benayoun reached Kuyt who passed the ball inside to Gerrard. The Liverpool captain tried to engineer a shooting opportunity but was blocked by John Terry. The ball fell to Torres who unleashed a shot first time, but the Spaniard's strike flashed inches wide of the left-hand post.

As the game drew to a close Chelsea scored a second to finish the game. Drogba collected a long-ball in the right of the penalty area and muscled past two Liverpool players to the byline. The Ivorian cut the ball back to substitute Malouda who tapped the ball home to seal the contest.

Moments later Benayoun had a glorious chance to grab one back for Liverpool, the ball was crossed in from the left and the Israeli controlled brilliantly to leave himself one-on-one with Hilario. Benayoun feined a shot and committed the Portuguese, he looked certain to score but dragged his shot wide of the left-hand post.

Hilario was involved again in the 95th minute, saving a stinging strike from Gerrard. The Portuguese dived to his right to push the ball out for a corner. As the ball was cleared from the subsequent set piece the referee blew for full time, 2-0 to Chelsea.

How to Use Facebook to Start-up Your Business

Whether you like it or not, Facebook has come to stay! If you’re a smart web entrepreneur, you need to start using Facebook to reach out to millions of Nigerian and African Facebook users who are actively involved with the most popular site for the year 2008.

In case you don’t know, Facebook is a social utility that connects people from all over the world (about 150 million). When the site was created, most people didn’t recognise Facebook’s business potentials. But today, most popular and successful sites such as CNN are using the Facebook’s utilities such as applications, etc to build their brands.

So what are ways business start-ups can tap into Facebook’s utilities?

Group

Like other social networking sites, Facebook allows users to create a group page for free. This group could be within several categories such as Internet & Technology, Advertising & Marketing, Media & Entertainment, Music, Politics, Sports, and so on.

When you start a group on Facebook, you can invite members to join the group and share their thoughts, opinions and discussions about your product, idea or start-up. Invitation to join a Facebook group can be via your Facebook friends, your Yahoo contacts, etc.

By participating in the discussions of the group, you can promote your business start-up and create more awareness, while establishing contacts and potential partners. You can also connect with potential customers and redirect them to your start-up website.

Application

A Facebook application can take on many forms, but in order to fully utilize the suite of integration points and deliver a full user experience, it is recommended that you integrate your application into certain areas of the Facebook profile. This application connects you to your potential users, customers and partners.

Note: In order to create a Facebook application, you should be well versed in PHP or some other coding language — such as Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, or Python — especially one that has a client library for Facebook’s API. You need to have a basic understanding of the Internet, SSH, MySQL, and Unix. You also need to be familiar with Web hosting fundamentals and have a place to host your application. Read more

Your business start-up can use some Facebook advertisement too to build your brand. With as little as $30 (about N5000 naira), you can have your business ad banner placed across several Facebook pages. This allows millions of people to see your business everywhere on Facebook and attract potential customers, who would naturally visit your start-up website.

Personally, I’ve found Facebook useful for connecting with business contacts and potential partners. Although, Startups Nigeria has not created an application or used some advertisement, Facebook has been a great tool for promoting the website.

Are you a Facebook fan? Do you use Facebook for business? What Facebook tools and technologies have you used to build your business? How have these Facebook utilities helped you to promote your business?

Nigerians And Facebook: What Is Your View?

Facebook fans from Nigeria is over 340, 000 and keeps growing by the day. In January, when the number of active Facebook fans from Nigeria was slightly over 200, 000, we predicted approximately 600,000 Nigerian Facebook active users by end of June 2009.

At the rate at which Facebook is growing in Nigeria, it becks the question: Can any Nigerian social networking site break the Facebook flow?

Granted, with over 10 million Nigerians on the Internet, that figure is just a fraction. So is there a way Nigerian social networks can capitalise on this internet population? Can they offer a service that Facebook is not offering?

Again, if Nairaland was a real social networking site (now with over 320, 000 members), could it out-Facebook Facebook? Can Naijapals or Legwork beat Facebook (in terms of Nigerian users)? While I’m skeptical about the possibilities, I think there’s probably something they need to do to achieve this.

Could they leverage on the over 63 million mobile subscribers in Nigeria to provide great social networking features second to none? I think this is possible!

Given the fact that more and more people in Nigeria are accessing the Internet via their mobile phones, social networking sites could take advantage and offer great mobile social networking tools, products and services that would get people to perhaps move away from the Facebook frenzy.

What are your thoughts?
